August 2018 Dell Medical School Training
We hosted an incredibly successful training on August 18 at the Dell Medical School Health Learning Building for students who were interested in working with HTS this year. We had over sixty attendees, not including the current volunteers who helped lead the event.
We would like to send a huge thank you to Dr. Rene Salazar, who got the training approved through Dell Medical School, bought breakfast for everyone at the training, organized speakers and who tirelessly supported us in promoting HTS at the Dell Medical School. Unfortunately, he was unable to attend the training due to an illness in the family. It is really thanks to him that this training came into fruition, and we send our thoughts and prayers to him and his family. Mr. Jesus Ortega, who is the Diversity and Equity Manager at Dell Medical School, and a coworker of Dr. Salazar, came to the rescue the day of the training and took on all of Dr. Salazar's roles. He gave a fantastic presentation on effective mentoring, focusing on the importance of empathy and support when HTS volunteers go out into their communities. He also presented on the value of differences, and the many advantages of diversity. We are so grateful to him and for his wonderful work. In addition to Mr. Ortega's presentations, we also had a series of brief speeches covering the logistics and many aspects of HTS. We are very grateful to Sruthi Ilangovan, Carolina Govea, Tammy Huynh, Eshita Sangani, Bryce Yeazell, Nihita Sarma, Rayna Manchala, Nisha Vishag, and Ari Sharma for their presentations and help in setting up and running the training. We also had a fantastic panel of current first year medical students at Dell Medical School, which was lead by Mr. Ortega. The students told us about their journey to medicine, how they knew it was their passion, and the many struggles they had overcome. They focused on the importance of finding what makes one happy, and not being afraid of change. The training was a great way to introduce new members to the HTS community, and we look forward to continuing to work with everyone. -----Elisabeth Torres-Schulte |
