HTS in 2017-2019
After great results from HTS School Visits, HTS met with DMS Vice Dean for Strategy and Partnership, Dr. Mini Kahlon and DMS Assistant Dean for Diversity, Dr. Rene Salazar. HTS became an official DMS Community Partner and DMS would provide more support from its medical faculty. This translated into three medical lectures and STEM lecture.
Additionally, due to HTS’s success, Austin Independent School District (AISD) Board of Trustees District 4 Representative, Ms. Julie Cowan, encouraged HTS to expand. HTS Leaders held an information session at the AISD Boardroom and principals and science teachers from District 3 Title I elementary schools were invited. AISD Science Department Representative, Dr. Barbara Ten Brink also attended. After the presentation, Dr. Ten Brink recognized HTS was what the National Science Foundation (NSF) calls Teen Science Café. Since AISD had an NSF grant to promote Teen Science Cafes, Dr. Ten Brink and the AISD Science Department became HTS sponsors.
Through medical lectures, HTS helps keep the Austin area a healthy place!

Talk on Dell Medical School
On Tuesday, Jan 15th HTS sponsored a lunchtime lecture featuring Dr. Stephen Smith, Associate Dean of Student Life at Dell Medical School. Dr. Smith shared with our students what medical school is like, as well as the unique approach Dell Medical School takes in order to encourage their students to make a difference in the community. Students were also given the opportunity to ask Dr. Smith their own questions and learn more about his history at The University of Alabama’s Medical School and Dell Medical.
