Making HTS a Global Initiative
HTS in 2016-2017:
HTS is a health initiative started in 2016 with 30 students from LASA High School. HTS provides information about health & promotes health sciences research using the science fair curriculum through in-class monthly school visits. HTS’s mission is to eradicate all preventable illnesses. HTS is sponsored by Dell Medical School and the Texas Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Obesity, among other organizations. HTS leaders were commended by Mayor Adler, Texas Senator Watson and AISD Superintendent Cruz.
HTS in 2017-2019:
HTS is now citywide initiative that took a leap from being a one-school effort to having HTS Chapters at several schools. HTS has now 150 student volunteers who mentor 1500 elementary school kids in Title I Elementary Schools.
HTS has expanded from mainly doing school visits, to now focusing on citywide community health fairs, to awarding regional health sciences awards for a 33-county area covered by the Austin Regional Science Fair (AERSF), to citywide STEM/Science events, to medical lectures available to Austin and suburbs, and to focusing on Type 2 Diabetes citywide education. All this thanks to collaborative efforts with multiple sponsors and partners.
HTS has become a global initiative with 3 HTS Chapters abroad, partially funding health projects in Tanzania and Zambia, and supporting health initiatives in 3 Sub-Saharan countries.
